If you don’t know what cannabidiol is by now, where have you been?! Usually called by the much simpler name CBD, cannabidiol is the new star of the cannabis plant. While cannabis used to be infamous for its ability to cause a high, it is now causing a stir for an entirely different reason.

The cannabis high comes from a compound called THC, which is a cannabinoid. CBD is also a cannabinoid, a cousin of THC, but it is completely non-psychoactive. In other words, it’s impossible to get high using CBD. Instead, CBD is thought to have a positive impact on our health, working with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to improve general health and wellbeing.

In case you didn’t know, the endocannabinoid system is a biological system tied to a number of functions. It helps us to regulate temperature, mood, sleep, appetite, inflammation, illness, and more. This vastly important system often struggles to keep up, which is where CBD comes in. By taking a CBD supplement, you can better the functioning of the ECS and therefore give your health a little boost.

As more and more people learn about the wonders of CBD, the industry is growing. Health and wellness addicts everywhere are buzzing to get their hands on a bottle of CBD oil, but they’re also rushing to take CBD bath salts, teas, moisturisers and capsules off the shelves.

A popular option is to try out cooking with CBD. While food recipes are simply delicious, tasty CBD beverages are taking over. In particular, the CBD latte has become a recent trend in the wellness sector. But why? Today, we will be investigating just that. Stick around to find out what makes CBD lattes so good. We’ll even give you three CBD recipes to try out for yourself – including caffeine-free and vegan options!

What is a CBD Latte?

CBD lattes are pretty much exactly what they sound like – lattes, but infused with CBD. If you don’t frequent Starbucks very often, a latte is a type of coffee made with espresso and hot steamed milk; it’s like a cappuccino, but milkier.

Some people are concerned about adding CBD to coffee. Caffeine is often said to be bad for our health, and so adding a foreign substance into it might sound like a bad idea. But actually, CBD and coffee actually go hand-in-hand…

Do CBD and Coffee Work Well Together?

According to studies, CBD may be able to boost your energy levels. Well, that is, if you take it in the daytime. A study conducted on rodent models found that application of CBD caused a rise in wakefulness if it was taken during hours when you are supposed to be awake. If taken in the evening, it caused increased sleepiness.

So, if you are the type of person who just needs a cup of Joe in the morning, then CBD could be your saviour. Try switching to decaf coffee, and add in CBD to provide the energy boost you need! As CBD is natural, safe (even for children), and has very few side effects, it could be the alternative to caffeine that we all need.

If you don’t want to take the caffeine out of your regular cup of coffee, no worries. Adding in CBD could still help you to maintain balance and become less stressed and paranoid after the caffeine intake. Since the endocannabinoid system’s job is to keep everything in balance, CBD’s assistance could ensure that caffeine doesn’t tip everything out of whack. In other words, the caffeine jitters you get might just disappear with the helpful addition of CBD.

Also, CBD lattes are simply a great way to take CBD. Rather than taking a sublingual oil day in day out, you can just add a few CBD drops to your daily cup of coffee and, hey presto, you’ve taken your CBD for the day!

Advocates of the CBD latte have said that it improves mental clarity, reduces anxiety, and keeps them alert and awake. With this incredibly easy way to take CBD, what’s not to love? It’s tastier than a hemp-flavoured oil, and perhaps even easier to fit into your daily routine. Really, it’s no wonder that it’s such a trend.

Choosing the Perfect CBD for Your Latte

It’s possible to buy CBD-infused coffee granules online. Making instant coffee packed full of CBD has never been easier with these easy sachets. However, they just don’t compare to the delightful creations you can come up with yourself.

Once you have made one CBD latte, you can experiment with your own flavours and varieties.

No matter what kind of CBD latte you choose to make, you’re going to need the right kind of CBD. First of all, there is the matter of product type. You have to have a CBD oil that is the right strength for you. If you opt for a full-spectrum (or even broad-spectrum) oil, then try to find one that is either unflavoured or natural flavoured. Of course, if you’re going for a tasty latte with interesting flavours, then certain flavoured CBD oils might suit exactly what you need.

Alternatively, you could choose a CBD isolate powder. These ensure you get only CBD (and no THC or other cannabinoids), and also are completely flavourless. An extra benefit is that it can stir into a coffee easily, whereas oils are hydrophobic and won’t mix with water.

This is why you might be best opting for a CBD liposome. Liposomes are special forms of CBD that are designed to mix into a glass of water, and are perfect for creating CBD beverages. If you can’t find a CBD liposome that is to your liking, then by all means use an oil. However, make sure you use a fat-based substance like milk in your latte so that everything blends together well.

Now that you have your CBD product on hand, let’s get on with the recipes!

CBD Latte Recipe: The Classic One

This CBD latte is the gold standard. It’s easy to make, and you probably have all the ingredients in your kitchen already. It will take you only a few minutes, so you can grab a cup on your way to work in the morning or make it before you take the kids on the school run.

You will need:

  • 1-2 teaspoons of your favourite coffee grounds
  • 1 cup milk
  • CBD oil of your choice
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons honey (as an alternative to sugar)

  1. Over a low heat, combine the milk, honey, vanilla extract, sea salt, and CBD oil in a saucepan. Use the required amount of CBD oil to give your usual dose.
  2. Whisk the ingredients together and heat until warm.
  3. Pour the mixture into your preferred mug, already filled with coffee grounds and drink up!
  4. For an iced latte, simply pour the coffee over ice.

CBD Latte Recipe: The Caffeine Free One

If you are trying to quit caffeine and are using CBD to do so, then first of all, good for you! Research suggests that caffeine could be addictive and may not be so healthy for us in the long-term. Since CBD could act as an all-natural wake-promoting agent, a CBD latte could be your answer to a caffeine-free life.

This latte recipe is deliciously chocolate-y, satisfying your sugar cravings and your caffeine cravings all in one go. However, it doesn’t actually contain any caffeine! Instead, the CBD will give your body the welcome boost it needs, disguised in a tasty chocolate latte to mask the hemp flavour.

You will need:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • A sprinkle of cinnamon
  • CBD oil of your choice

  1. Combine all ingredients except the CBD in a small saucepan.
  2. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, whisking to break up any powder clumps and mix in the syrup.
  3. When the mixture is simmering, remove from heat and whisk in the CBD.
  4. Pour into a mug, sprinkle some extra cinnamon over the top, and serve.

CBD Latte Recipe: The Vegan One

If you’re anything like us, you just can’t resist a pumpkin spice latte. The PSL is an autumn staple, and it will certainly warm you up just like a chunky cable-knit sweater. But could it be improved? Yes – by adding CBD and making it vegan.

In this recipe, you can use any plant-based milk of your choice. However, we recommend hemp milk. Yes, that’s right – the plant that gave us CBD can also provide you with a healthy, protein-packed source of vegan-friendly milk. Using hemp milk sticks nicely with the hemp theme, but you are free to use any milk you choose.

You will need (for 2 servings):

  • 2 cups hemp milk (or any plant-based milk of your choice)
  • ¼ cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • CBD oil of your choice
  • Whipped cream (dairy-free of course!) for garnish

  1. Whisk together the coconut milk, pumpkin puree, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and a pinch of salt in a medium saucepan.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the espresso together with the boiling water. Pour this into the saucepan with the other ingredients.
  3. Place the saucepan on a medium heat. Stir in the vanilla extract, sugar, and coconut oil.
  4. Stir the mixture frequently until the liquid is about to boil, then remove from heat.
  5. Add in the CBD oil and stir. Serve the latte between two mugs, then top with whipped cream and potentially an extra sprinkle of cinnamon.
