CBD: The supplement that everybody who’s anybody is talking about. It seemed to appear out of nowhere. One day, nobody knew what it was; the next, everybody and their mums had started taking it.

It’s understandable to feel a little confused and overwhelmed by CBD. Many people are sceptical about it and perplexed as to where it came from. But the industry for CBD is huge now, and it’s likely that we’ll be seeing more and more of it rather than less and less.

If you live in London, chances are you’re already at least a little familiar with CBD. The capital of England has seen a huge surge in CBD’s popularity, and now you can get your hands on it pretty much anywhere in the city. Just take a look around, and you’ll see CBD being advertised somewhere or other.

However, you might not fully understand what CBD is, and you might not even know if it is entirely legal. If you are interested in learning about CBD and live in the capital, then you’ve come to the right place: This is our full guide to CBD in London.

What is CBD and is it Legal in London?

Cannabidiol, also called CBD, is a popular health supplement that comes from the cannabis plant. People are often concerned about how legal it is to buy and openly use, since it is obvious that cannabis is strictly illegal.

Or is it?

Contrary to popular belief, cannabis is not necessarily illegal. Instead, ‘cannabis’ refers to a family of plants, each of which has different characteristics. The illegal member of the family is marijuana, a plant containing a high quantity of the cannabinoid THC. It is this compound that gets people high, and marijuana’s use as a recreational drug is what has led to its illegal status.

However, there are other members of the cannabis family. One member is hemp, a plant that is extremely low in THC. Instead, it contains much higher quantities of CBD. While CBD is a cousin of THC in that it has a similar molecular structure, it is quite different. CBD is completely non-psychoactive, meaning it can’t get you high. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that CBD can balance out the THC high and reduce THC’s psychoactive effects, making the 0.3% THC present in the hemp plant effectively redundant.

Unfortunately, the entire umbrella of cannabis is under legal restriction, including hemp. But while marijuana is 100% illegal without exception, hemp is still legal to grow and sell as long as you have a license from the Home Office. Hemp is a very useful and nutritional plant, and hemp foods are often sold in supermarkets; hemp seeds, hemp seed oil, and hemp milk are all fairly common.

CBD, since it is not an intoxicant, is also legal, albeit with some caveats. The health benefits of CBD were recently brought to light during cases of severe childhood epilepsy, where cannabis-derived medications were able to help reduce seizures. Other studies into CBD have suggested that it may have benefits for other conditions. However, the CBD you buy online and in shops is NOT the same.

Medicinal CBD must be licensed by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), and these medications often contain other cannabinoids like THC. Obviously, it is not legal to take these without a prescription from a licensed doctor.

The CBD food supplements in shops are not intended to treat any ailments, and manufacturers claiming that their products can do so are breaking the law. Fortunately, most brands don’t do this.

Another legal issue is THC content. As long as the CBD product you’re buying contains less than 0.2% THC, it is perfectly legal.

Basically, all you need to know is that hemp-derived CBD food supplements and beauty products are fully legal. This also applies to CBD e-liquids and other products, as long as they contain less than 0.2% THC.

Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s good, so why is everybody suddenly taking CBD?

Why is Everyone Taking CBD in London?

There is a reason CBD has become such a popular supplement as of late: It’s good for you.

We all have something called an endocannabinoid system (ECS), a system responsible for balancing out your body and regulating a range of functions. The ECS helps us control our temperature, stabilise our mood, get a good night’s sleep, regulate our appetite, and so much more. It is a vital system for our survival.

As such, it’s important to keep the ECS running smoothly and ensure that it’s in tip top condition. Normally, it runs itself using compounds called endocannabinoids. However, we often don’t produce enough endocannabinoids by ourselves to keep the system in perfect harmony. This is where CBD comes in.

When you take CBD, it encourages the body to make more endocannabinoids. This helps the ECS to function better, still in a completely natural way. In other words, it can restore balance in the body completely naturally. With the ECS connected to so many other bodily systems, this has a knock-on effect which boosts your health and improves your overall wellbeing.

Clearly, the advantages of CBD are numerous. Taking it just makes you overall healthier, which in turn leads to a number of other benefits.

Most consumers take CBD in the form of a sublingual oil. This comes in a small bottle with a pipette attached, or sometimes in an aerosol spray. Simply drop some of the CBD-infused oil under your tongue and hold it there for 90 seconds before swallowing; the CBD will be absorbed into the blood through capillaries in the mouth.

Alternatively, you can try out CBD capsules, vape liquids, moisturisers, and even bath bombs. The possibilities are endless!

Can I Buy CBD in London?

If, like many other people, CBD has piqued your interest and you want to give it a go, you might be wondering where you can get it.

London-dwellers are lucky, because CBD can be found absolutely everywhere. You don’t even have to buy CBD oil to keep at home – just grab a CBD snack! Here are some of our favourite places to grab a CBD bite in London:

A brunch spot with a difference, Farmacy prides itself on healthy ingredients. CBD has recently found its way onto the menu, appearing in the CBD-infused truffles featured on the high tea menu. The truffles are flavoured with either tahini and dark chocolate or basmati and coconut. You can find Farmacy at Westbourne Grove.

Frozen yoghurt is a must during the summer months. A little healthier than ice cream, froyo is a great way to cool down in the heat. Yogland, also located in Westbourne Grove, now sells a Hemp Matcha flavour of their vegan frozen yoghurt, loaded with 40% CBD oil.

Behind This Wall

If alcoholic drinks and cocktails are more your scene, then this bar is perfect. They make their very own CBD syrups to add into drinks, including the Fo’ Sizzle Dizzle Swizzle, made with Seedlip Grove 42, sake, and honey & ginger CBD syrup. Yummy! CBD beer is apparently popular, but cocktails are just all that more delicious. You can find Behind This Wall in Hackney.

The Feel Good Café

At the Feel Good Café, CBD is a must. They make their own CBD in the form of the Feel Good Essentials oil; you can buy a bottle to take home with you if you really like it. Plus, you can add it to pretty much anything on the menu if you want to experiment with your CBD intake. The café is located in Chingford.

Alternatively, you can buy your own CBD. Cannabidiol products are appearing everywhere, so it shouldn’t be hard to find. In fact, both Holland & Barrett and Boots now sell CBD oils. You could also check out your local pharmacy.

Even easier is buying CBD oil online. There are plenty of reputable brands in the UK now, so a quick Google will reveal all to you. Try out some brands bred right out of London, such as The London Botanists or Hemp Botanics on Portobello Road. Better yet, try out an industry-leading brand like PROVACAN, who’s range of CBD products is backed by state-of-the-art Israeli science.
