CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil: What’s the Difference?

When you first step into the world of CBD, there is a lot to learn. It can seem overwhelming, with a whole lot of terms to learn and facts to know about so that you can feel clued up about what you’re putting into your body.

If you haven’t tried CBD oil yet and you’re looking to give it a try, then you might have come across hemp seed oil and CBD hemp oil online. But what is the difference between the two? If you’re looking to buy a CBD oil to derive some of the potential health benefits of cannabinoids, you’re going to want to avoid hemp seed oil, which is what we will be discussing in this article.

We will tell you all there is to know about CBD oil, hemp oil, and what the differences are between the two. But first, let’s talk about the hemp plant and just how useful it can be.

The Hemp Plant

Hemp is a plant that has been grown for centuries. Technically a form of the Cannabis sativa plant, hemp is in fact classified as cannabis. It has been grown for centuries due to its great health benefits, as hemp is actually incredibly nutritious. Not only can parts of the hemp plant be consumed, but the plant fibres in the stalk can be used in rope, clothes, and other textiles. It has even been used as a construction material.

Hemp is also a wonderful agricultural tool, as it can survive in harsh environments and grow in otherwise toxic soil. Hemp absorbs the toxins from the soil, allowing other plants to flourish. It can be grown in many outdoor environments without pesticides.

One key thing to note about hemp is that, under license, it can be grown here in the UK. Marijuana, which is another variety of Cannabis sativa, is under much tighter legislation. Why is this? Well, both varieties of cannabis contain specialised plant compounds called cannabinoids, one of which is CBD. But CBD has a much more notorious cousin: THC. This compound is psychoactive, and it is what produces the high associated with marijuana use. As a result, marijuana is strictly prohibited.

Hemp, on the other hand, only contains trace amounts of THC but is still high in CBD, allowing certain benefits to be derived from the plant without having to endure any intoxication.

Hemp Seed Oil

The seeds of the hemp plant are actually very nutritious, and they can be cold-pressed to create an oil. This oil is a deep green in colour, and is often taken as a food supplement.

Hemp seeds contain a lot of polyunsaturated fats – the healthy kind of fat – as well as being rich in protein and essential fatty acids such as omega 3 and omega 6. They also contain plenty of fibre and Vitamin E antioxidants. Furthermore, they are packed full of minerals including potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium, and phosphorus.

All of these components are fantastic for a healthy diet and lifestyle. Omega 3 fatty acids, for example, improve heart health, can help to reduce weight and waist size, decrease liver fat, and can even help your breath health. Antioxidants can help you to retain your youth and look young and rejuvenated, and potassium can decrease risk of stroke, lowers blood pressure, and preserves bone mineral density, among other things.

This is why hemp seed oil is so highly regarded. It can also be used for vegans, as proteins and fatty acids can be hard to come by for vegans and vegetarians alike, and hemp seed oil is entirely plant-based.

However, if you’re looking to get some cannabinoids like CBD into your diet, hemp seed oil is pretty much useless. The cannabinoids and terpenes are not actually found in the seeds of the hemp plant, and thus they are not contained within hemp seed oil, either.

If you’re just after a healthy food supplement, then hemp seed oil is ideal; it’s nutty, earthy taste can be great for drizzling over salads or using in dips and sauces. Note, however, that it can’t be used for cooking as it has a low smoke point. But if cannabinoids are what you’re after, then hemp seed oil is not the way to go.

What You Need to Know About CBD Oil

In the UK, CBD oil is also made from the industrial hemp plant – not from marijuana, as it may be in places where this is legal. It does not come from the same parts of the plant as hemp seed oil, though, and it contains different things.

When the hemp plant grows, it produces compounds called cannabinoids and terpenes. These are extremely useful in the plant’s growth, and the terpenoids also provide plants with their aroma and flavour.

To make CBD oil, manufacturers usually called a technique called supercritical CO2 extraction. This involves heating carbon dioxide and raising the pressure until it enters a supercritical state, meaning that it behaves like both a liquid and a gas. In this state, it can be used as a sort of solvent, meaning that when it is passed over hemp, it can extract a full range of cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant material.

The extracted CBD (and other compounds) is then suspended in an oil form to be sold to consumers. While, like hemp seed oil, CBD oil can be drizzled over food or baked into cakes, it is more often taken sublingually – a few drops are placed beneath the tongue and help for 90 seconds before swallowing.

As you have probably figured out, the main difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil is, well, the CBD. But why would people want to take CBD in the first place?

Humans have a network of cannabinoid receptors that work in conjunction with endocannabinoids – ones that we produce ourselves. Collectively, this biological network is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is vital to our survival because it helps to regulate a vast array of biological functions and keep our bodies working properly. Sometimes, however, it can fall a little off balance.

The idea behind taking CBD oil is that plant cannabinoids like CBD can mimic the endocannabinoids we make ourselves, providing our bodies with a small boost by helping to keep our ECS on track. In other words, CBD helps us to stay healthy and promote our general wellbeing.

An important thing to note is that, since CBD oil is made from hemp in the UK, it still contains trace amounts of THC, meaning that you can’t get high by using it.

Final Thoughts on CBD and Hempseed Oil

Hemp seed oil and CBD oil come from the same plant, and neither contain much – if any – THC. The main differences between them both are that they come from different parts of the plant – hemp seed oil from the seeds and CBD oil from the stem and leaves – and that only CBD oil contains any cannabinoids.
