A lot of us are really into our fitness routines. Whether you’re new to the world and are wondering where to start with workout supplements, or whether you’re a veteran user of protein powder and are thinking about switching to a more natural product, there is something out there for all of us.

As it turns out, hemp products are big in the fitness industry. Protein powders derived from the hemp plant have been in usage for some time now, but could we be using another of its powers, CBD, in our fitness routines, too?

Let’s take a look at how hemp might slot quite nicely into our workout regime.

CBD’s Health Benefits

Cannabidiol, also called CBD, is a cannabinoid, meaning that it is one of the active compounds in the Cannabis Sativa plant. It is thought to possess some pretty great wellness properties, which is why many people have begun to take it as part of their daily routine.

The body has something called the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which consists of cannabinoid receptors and endocannabinoids, which we produce ourselves. The ECS’ job is to maintain homeostasis, which is a fancy way of saying it keeps our body in balance. It does this through the cannabinoid receptors, which sit on top of cells and “listen” to external conditions in the body. When something changes, the endocannabinoids inform the cells so that they can respond accordingly. Endocannabinoids are created to help this process.

Studies into CBD have shown that, when ingested, it promotes the creation of extra endocannabinoids, thus helping us to regulate our ECS and in turn promote general health and wellbeing. This could be great news for health addicts, as it is an all-natural compound which can help our body to function properly by combatting low levels of endocannabinoids.

CBD for Pre-workout Energy

Part of a good fitness regime is having the energy to get in a killer session at the gym. A lot of gym-goers take pre-workout supplements, which provide you with the necessary energy to push yourself as hard as possible. Could you be using CBD for your pre-workout?

Since CBD has such a positive effect on the endocannabinoid system, it could boost your energy levels. The ECS controls energy levels through the involvement of neurotransmitter systems, and this process could be positively affected by CBD oil. Furthermore, simply by staying healthy using CBD oil and regulating all your body’s functions, you’ll probably feel more energised anyway! You could also take a CBD tea or coffee for an extra boost.

It might not give you a euphoric hype like other pre-workouts, but it certainly seems to be a natural way to improve energy levels in general.

CBD for Post-workout Recovery

Even more promising seems to be using CBD as part of a post-workout regime. The ECS is largely involved in post-workout recovery. The interaction between endocannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors regulates sleep, appetite, pain, and immune function, all of which are essential in recovery.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine suggested that “endurance exercise activates the endocannabinoid system”, which in turn affects the mental state. Cardiovascular exercise raises the levels of anandamide (an endocannabinoid) in the blood drastically, which heightens mood and is what provides you with that post-workout ‘high.’ In other words, the ECS is responsible for endorphins released during exercise.

Since CBD has an impact on the ECS, it will likely make you feel even more elated and positive after you crush that gym session.

Furthermore, post-workout, it is essential that your body returns itself to homeostasis. You need to reduce your temperature and rebuild those muscles you might have damaged while lifting weights. Great news: CBD can help you do just that. By promoting the creation of endocannabinoids, you can make sure your body is returned to its natural, healthy state.

The ECS also has a role in food intake, ensuring that we eat the right amount and get hungry when we’re running low. By prompting the ECS to function properly using CBD, you might be able to better regulate food intake, which coincides with workouts to make you the healthiest you can be.

Lastly, the ECS is important in sleep regulation. Sleep is important in recovery, because it’s when our body can expend its energy on repairing the body. By using CBD to encourage the ECS to do its proper job, you can get the required amount of sleep you need to stay healthy and on top of your game.

Can I Use CBD as Part of My Fitness Routine?

There are plenty of ways to take CBD, whether it be in sublingual oil form or in a capsule. Really, you could add a few drops of CBD oil to your post-workout protein shake (made with hemp protein, of course!).

It appears that CBD could make a good addition to your fitness routine, whether you add it in pre-workout to give you a boost or whether you take it afterward to aid in your recovery. CBD is a very versatile compound, and whether you work out regularly or not, it could still be a wonderful thing to slot into your routine simply to promote general wellbeing.
