How the U.K. is Partnering with Israeli Cannabis Research Teams to Create Some of the Best CBD Products in the World

Things are moving fast for cannabis lately, what with Canada legalising the plant completely for recreational use, many countries moving toward medical uses for cannabis (including in the UK), and the use of CBD skyrocketing almost everywhere. With this increased interest in cannabidiol and its products, more and more brands are popping up in the UK.

With the CBD industry being an unregulated one, it’s tricky to find a company that you can trust. Some people feel as though the much bigger markets in the USA and Canada are making for higher quality CBD oils across the pond, but this isn’t strictly true. The UK has some pretty great brands on offer, too, one of which has been put together through years of cannabis research in Israel.

It’s unlikely that most people would associate Israel with cannabis, but there’s actually a really important, interesting connection here. In this article, we take a look at the importance of Israeli cannabis research and how years of work have accumulated in the formation of one very special brand.

Israel and Cannabis: The Backstory

During the 20th century, cannabis was illegal pretty much all over the world due to significant amounts of fearmongering from governments. It was painted as a societal ill, and was therefore prohibited. However, when marijuana was banned, it was understood very little, and with such strict laws it was hard to research it at all.

In fact, scientists didn’t even really know what cannabinoids were at this point. That was until Professor Raphael Mechoulam successfully isolated CBD, THC and CBG from the cannabis plant, describing their chemical structure for the first time. It is thanks to this discovery that any cannabis research can take place at all. Born in Bulgaria, Mechoulam was working out of a lab at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem – that’s right, in Israel.

With his colleagues, Professor Mechoulam began to investigate the effects of cannabinoids on primates, and later on human subjects. The team of researchers found that CBD may be useful in the treatment of epilepsy, but the negative stigma of cannabis meant that their published findings were mostly ignored.

Someone clearly took note, though, because Israel legalised marijuana for medicinal use in the early 1990s, leaps and bounds ahead of many other countries around the world. Medical marijuana was available for those suffering from pain-related illnesses like chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and Crohn’s disease. In 2012, there were 10,000 people registered to be using medical marijuana in Israel, and this number has only continued to grow since.

Since medical cannabis has been picking up speed lately, Israel has recently (since 2017) allowed medical cannabis companies to export their products. This is because it is estimated to bring in $267 million each year.

With all the buzz surrounding medical cannabis, Israel has been smart to position itself as a global leader in cannabis research. Headed by world-class scientists like Professor Mechoulam, the cannabis research sector is supported by the Ministry of Health. As such, many foreign companies are moving into Israel to carry out their research on the plant, as it is much easier to do so here than anywhere else in the world.

What About Recreational Cannabis in Israel?

Israel might be quick to recognise the benefits that medical cannabis could have to offer, but they have not legalised the plant completely. Citizens caught using cannabis for the first time may face fines; $275 for the first offense and $550 for the second. The money collected from these fines is filtered into education and rehabilitation programmes. The third offense earns you mandatory participation in rehabilitation, and the fourth offense could end up in incarceration. Enforcement is relatively lax unless cannabis is consumed in public.

In April 2017, the government reported that they were considering further legalisation, but it is unclear whether this will occur. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently blocked exports of cannabis so as to avoid upsetting President Donald Trump, who presides over a country facing a marijuana turmoil. However, with countries like Canada making the move, it’s possible that Israel could decide to follow.

Whether they make the recreational step or not, Israel is doubtless world-class when it comes to pioneering marijuana research.

Founded in 2017, CiiTech is a company that is dedicated to furthering cannabis research. They were created by Clifton Flack, the former founder of iCAN: Israel-Canabis, and another company called CannaTech. They are based out of Israel, working closely with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and leading researchers like Professor Mechoulam to improve the scope for CBD products around the world.

CiiTech is one of the best companies when it comes to cannabis knowledge, but they admit that their research is far from complete. So far, they have carried out research of the effects of phytocannabinoids (plant cannabinoids) on obesity induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and a study on CBD’s ability to combat asthma symptoms. More studies funded by CiiTech are also in the pipeline.

While they utilise the legislation and expertise of the cannabis research community in Israel, CiiTech’s products are intended for the UK and European market. They have two brands they sell their products under: PROVACAN (classic CBD) and HERBALICA (infused CBD). Here, Provacan is considered one of the best brands for high-quality CBD.

Provacan is an extremely high quality brand thanks to the research from CiiTech. As well as CBD, their products contain a range of other cannabinoids and terpenes, intending to create an entourage effect. The cannabinoids featured in their products includes CBG, CBDv, CBC and THCVa.

Provacan has a range of products. There are two strengths of sublingual CBD oils, both of which come in 10ml bottles: 600mg (6%) and 1200mg (12%). Both of these options are reasonably priced for the strength of oil, especially when you consider the quality.

Alongside oils, Provacan sells topicals, including a 30ml tub of natural beeswax balm containing 300mg of CBD. This is a great way to keep your skin feeling soft, smooth and relaxed. Furthermore, Provacan’s 20ml massage oil is a very unique application for CBD; it is meant to be applied pre- and post-workout to soothe sore muscles and help the skin at the same time. The massage oil contains 100mg of CBD. Once again, these products are reasonably priced, with the massage oil priced at a mere £19.99.

For those who enjoy vaping their CBD, Provacan has a huge range of options, including a CBD e-liquid containing plenty of terpenes. They also sell some Joyetech vape pens and a vape pen starter kit including a bottle of one of their oils.

Summing Up: Should You Buy Provacan?

We are lucky to live in a country where companies like Provacan sell their products. Backed with years of Israeli research into cannabis, you can be sure that Provocan’s products are ones you can rely on.

In short, we do recommend Provocan products if you’re lost looking for which CBD brand to buy. They are safe, high-quality, legal, and built on years of good research.
